Improving the Relational Health of California since 2005

Healthy Relationships California:

Healthy Relationships California (HRC) is one of the nation’s pre-eminent Relationship Education organizations. HRC is one organization with multiple divisions and programs.  In 2005, HRC first started under the name, California Healthy Marriages Coalition (CHMC), a non-profit organization dedicated to improve the well-being of children by strengthening the relationship of parents through Marriage Education and Relationship Skills classes.

First Steps as the California Healthy Marriages Coalition:

In 2006, CHMC received a five-year, $11.9 Million grant from Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families (HHS/ACF), the largest grant ever awarded by HHS/ACF in support of Healthy Marriages.

Through this funding, CHMC has partnered with a more than 30 different faith- and community-based organizations (FBCOs) throughout California. Each of CHMC’s funded partner organizations is a coalition consisting of many other FBCOs through which they deliver Marriage Education and Relationship Skills classes, enabling HRC to reach California’s diverse population by traversing the key demographic dimensions of geography, ethnic/cultural differences, and agency-type FBCOs.

CHMC is an active division of HRC that has taught proven relationship-building skills to more than 102,000 Californians.

Connecting Dads with their Kids:

Based on the alarming statistics of fatherlessness and the abundance of data showing the positive outcomes from father involvement in a kids life, HRC launched the Dads & Kids Initiative. The initiative focuses on engaging leaders with solution-oriented steps that agencies and businesses can do to be more father-friendly, raising awareness on the importance and unique benefits for kids when their dads are actively involved in their lives, and helping dads and kids connect better through skills-based Relationship Education classes.

Helping Parents Have a Stronger Partner Relationship:

Lots of programs teach moms and dads how to be parents, but very few help the parents connect better and more deeply as partners. In a joint venture with First 5 San Bernardino and First 5 LA, HRC created Raising Kids Twogether, a couple-centered parenting program designed to help moms and dads (of kids aged 0-5), not only become better parents, but have a stronger couple relationship too.

New Name, New Brand, Same Mission:

To expand its influence and impact throughout California, in 2011, Healthy Relationships California became the new name of the organization with a seven-year track record in making California’s relationships stronger and healthier through Relationship Education.

Next steps for HRC include: creating Relationship Education modules for the workplace and business relationships, increasing the number of churches offering effective marriage and relationship ministry, and conducting and releasing our second statewide, baseline study on Californians’ attitudes and behaviors on marriage, divorce, and relationships.
